Merry Christmas!

As we gather with family and friends for the holidays, I want to say thank you for your kindness and support of my mission. I have raised $600 thus far, which puts me about halfway towards my fundraising goal. If you have not donated yet, I would appreciate any amount. My Crowdrise fundraising site is here.

I can’t believe how soon the trip is happening (January 27). I have started gathering all the stuff I will take with me, including bug spray, scrubs to wear at the hospital, and shoes that I will leave there when done (they get yucky). My next task is to get all the snacks and medical supplies that I might possibly need while there. I will try very hard NOT to get the traveler’s GI bug on this trip, which means I need to be more careful about what I eat. When I travel, I like to experience the full spectrum of food and life that my destination has to offer. However, I have to remember that Rwandan bacteria plus an American GI system can equal serious discomfort! See here if you missed last year’s adventures in dining in Rwanda.

When I’m there this year, I plan to take an overnight trip to see the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park. According to this article from the NY Times, there are only 900 of these gorillas remaining. I left Rwanda before this trip happened last year, and I promised myself that if I went back I would not miss the gorillas. This will definitely be a highlight of my trip, and I promise to share the photos.

  1. Leah! What you are doing is very important. I first learned about the issue in the book “Cutting for Stone” and know from it, as well, that you are proving a critical service. As to the gorillas …….. I am so very, very envious! Wish I could tag along in your suitcase. Takes my breath away. Look forward to the pictures.
